The Interdisciplinary concentration is important to me because it allows me to go outside the boundaries of traditional painting and sculpture. Having the ability to intertwine the aesthetics of each concentration but in a different approach allows me to create in a unique and specific style thinking of the two concentrations as a whole, rather than separate helps me work confidently in going forward with my goals. Madalena Abakanowicz, a sculptor, and her personal love for the figure has helped me become inspired to move forward with intent and desire in creating my work. I am inspired by my past, my present, emotions that lie inside of me, my personal experiences, tension in the human figure, in the mind and body.
I am interested in balancing painting and sculpture. My work is interactive with itself and the viewers feeding off of each other. Psychology plays a big role in my work, dealing with overwhelming elusive emotions. The emotions I can feel but cannot see, connecting the figure with the mind. Taking Mixed Media and Sculpture One in the same semester made me realize how badly I want to keep creating in a specific style. Learning different techniques in both classes and being given the freedom to bring them together allows me to experiment. Casting figures in rubber molds, working with multiples and series, painting with tar, enamel, plaster, wax, engaging in performance art using my body, are all parts of my main focus. All of my work is very personal, regarding memories that I cannot forget, but I can express the hardship of forgetting through and throughout my work. Working with this intent allows me to transcend and relinquish a memory or a specific feeling that is bothersome to me. Working intuitively with my emotions but, also having a sense of direction and knowing that I could not get any message across through a piece if I were to only supply just a 'painting' of just a 'sculpture'. It is the combination of both that makes the piece fulfilled.
My goal for this concentration is to go larger in scale, make more series and multiples of casted body parts of others who voulnteer. This means installing multiples in a room, outdoors, and in public. I want to engage with people around me, using their bodies to help make as many pieces as possible. The materials that I will be choosing to work with reside as painting and sculptural materials used on the human body, nature, such as trees, grassy fields, sticks, public areas that people can interact with. I believe that being given the opportunity to be apart of the interdisciplinary concentration will allow me to accomplish my future plans, being given the chance to take a wide range of classes, constantly engaging with painting and sculptural aesthetics in the approach that I have been working with. I plan to work collaboratively with other artists that are interested in working the same way that I do. All of the courses that will help me meet my goals are the courses that are offered in painting, sculpture, and printmaking. To me these are the most " hands on" classes that will allow me to be involved with the concentrations I know will provide me with the knowledge that I need to go ahead with my work.
